Thus good manners cover the whole range of our conduct in relation to our neighbours, especially such conduct will be noticed by them. Good manners are the skills of making people feel easy and comfortable. We cannot pretend to have good manners. Good manners must blossom forth from well-formed inner dispositions.
Essentials for Good Manners: There are two basic dispositions which act as the corner stones. They are : 1.UPRIGHTNESS OF MIND and 2. MORAL GOODNESS.
1. UPRIGHTNESS OF MIND: It is formed by studying the principles of right thinking from those who are recognized authorities in the matter and by dealing with those who are same. Uprightness of mind leads to right judgement. Commonsense is another word for right judgement. Commonsense should be embellished with a sense of humour. Sense of humour is an ornament to one’s good sense, adding beauty and charm to one’s personality.
2. MORAL GOODNESS: It is acquired by constantly trying to be right, according to well informed and upright conscience. Conscience is the soft whispers of god in persons. Conscience is the act to discern good from evil, an inner voice that beckons a person to act rightly. Conscience helps an individual to identify the accepted norms. We grow in moral goodness by constantly keeping company with those who are morally sound.
The uprightness of mind and moral goodness are essential for a good and sound character.

School is a temple of learning. In schools we learn to do the right things at right times and get a good name through your diligence, good conduct, regularity (punctuality), cleanliness, honesty, fortitude and courage. A good name is more precious than the finest gold.

When the signal for class is given i.e., as soon as the first bell goes, assemble in the class room and wait in silence for the teacher to come in. As soon as the teacher appears at the door, stand up respectfully till he or she takes the seat or says, ‘sit down’.
Be always punctual and in time for class. Punctuality manifests an appreciation and sensitivity for the value of time-commitments. It helps to develop peace, calmness, tranquility and self confidence. When adhered to faithfully, it wins the respect of others and contributes to the development of character.
If you happen to come late, do not go straight to your seat nor stand shuffling you feet at the door. Respectfully walk up to the teacher, hand over the late chit and say in a clear voice, Good Morning or Good day and then give your excuse in a gentle and polite way.
If during the class you have something to say to the teacher, or if you want to ask a question, use some polite words such as, ‘Please sir, may I know’, or ‘Could you kindly tell me’. etc.

When the class is over, stand up and wait in silence till the teacher walks out of the room. Allow the teacher to leave first, do not rush to the door before him or her. The same is to be observed after a meeting or a public function in a hall. Stand still and wait for VIPs to go out first.
When the teacher asks you a question in one language, answer in the same language, not in another. Speak distinctly. Do not just mumble. Speech makes a person.

The college too is a temple of learning and therefore enter the college with respect and a sincere desire to learn. The very moment you step into a college you are no more a little school kid, blithe and frolicsome. You are a young boy or a girl. You are on the threshold of life full of challenges in the wide world.
Your responsibility is very great. You own future and that of your country depends largely upon you. More than when you were at school, you are now preparing yourself for life. Many people and parents in old age will depend entirely on you. Always recall to your mind the great sacrifices your parents are making to educate you in a college.
Beware of levity of character, beware of temptations like mediocrity, rebellion, dishonesty, laziness, irregularity, antipathy, negligence, irresponsibility, selfishness and disloyalty. Many people are unemployable for want of character, good manners and discipline.
Cultivate great respect and love for your authorities : Principal, Vice-principals and Professors. When you are in the college, they take the place of your parent. Give honour to whom honour is due; you will then be honoured yourself. Be kind to others and others will be kind to you.
Render obedience to those who have the right to command. Develop respect for girls and women; avoid eye-teasing.
Avoid smoking; keep away from drugs and alcohol; it spoils your health and is a waste of money. Never be guilty of any disgraceful conduct or foul deed.
Take counsel of your elders and good suggestions of professors. They are the ones who mould your mind.

If you win, make it easy for your opponent to bear the defeat. If you are defeated, congratulate your opponent. If anyone points out some faults of yours, say nicely, “Thank You” or Sorry, I will be careful next time’ or something like that. Accepting one’s faults is a great act of humility which is a mark of greatness.
The captain’s orders must be promptly obeyed. The umpire’s decision should be accepted immediately without questions. Do not scream, or yell, or laugh noisily. You must learn to control your emotions.
If you see others in conversation and want to join, do not walk straight up to them and listen. Approach them quietly and say, “Sorry to interrupt’, or use some suitable form of salute of apology. Barging in without restraint will show you in poor light.
Avoid what is known as ‘monkeying’ with your class mates, e.g., tickling them, pasting stickers on their backs, pulling away chairs just when they are going to sit, etc. These are signs of immaturity.
If during a game some respectable people pass along the ground and the ball is in play near them, stop the game for a moment till they pass.

Observe the rules of the road carefully; the traffic usually is on the left; overtake on the right. Always walk on the platform. Pedestrians usually keep to right.
Do not walk hastily, do not run across the road at the time of traffic. Do not saunter along lazily, gazing this way or that way aimlessly. Carry always about you the dignity of your school or college and the good name of your family.
If you are walking with a person of dignity or your elder or superior, place yourself on his or her left; but if there are more than two, place the honoured person in the middle. When you come across a person of some importance, professors or superiors, salute them.
Do not cycle or drive through the streets at break-neck speed scaring everyone. It is impolite and dangerous to overcrowd the vehicles we ride on.
Before crossing the street, look to the left and to the right to see if there is any traffic coming your way. Cross only at the places allotted for crossing. Crossing yellow line is risky; crossing double yellow line is deadly. If there is any queue system at bus stops, booking offices, theatres etc., follow the queue scrupulously.
When boarding a bus or a train allow people to get down before you get in. When there is need, you must be generous enough to offer your seat to ladies and elderly persons. It is not proper to stretch your legs across to the opposite seat.
Do not litter the streets, or the floor of the buses, trains, common places with pieces of paper, waste material etc. Never urinate in public places or the streets.
Do not be noisy in the streets; avoid starring at people or pointing at them with the finger. Do not pass comments on the peculiarities of the people whom you meet in the streets. To whistle or laugh at ladies is impolite, dishonest, immoral and total vulgarity.
Do not stingy in the payment of poor folk with porters, coolies etc. nor argue over a trifle with vendors.

The happiest day in my life was during the summer vacation of 1995, when I spent the entire day playing with my childhood friends. One of my friends named Tasneem had a school assignment of painting ice-cream sticks. We always had the habit of helping each other with our schoolwork and this assignment was no exception.
Painting was an interest to each of us and we all enjoyed doing the work. The real fun was when we started spilling different colored paints on each other dirtying our hands. Tasneem’s mother accompanied us as well. With all the giggles, chuckles and fun going on and on, she appeared like another child too. Our aching stomachs and tear-filled eyes indicated how much we were overwhelmed by laughter.
Though fun was our main focus, we somehow managed to complete the assignment appropriately disregarding the time factor. With an intention to clean our hands, we then moved to a small pond in our area. Again, our focus was more on splashing water on each other for more fun. We played with water all evening, which added to our joy.
Amid all the scolding that we may have received from our parents later that day, the happiness that we shared within ourselves can never be forgotten in my life.
